Almost exactly a year ago, I wished for myself to keep these things in mind as the year progressed -
1. Stop buying junk food and switch to buying more fruits.
2. Work on getting over OCD.
3. Forgive more, forget less.
4. It's okay to fail sometimes. The world won't end.
5. Live and laugh more. Life isn't always serious.
6. Falling in love and hoping for the best is better than being cautious and expecting things to end.
7. Finish submissions. On time.
8. Don't skip meals. Drink water.
9. Write more.
10. Learn to say "NO".
11. Expect less.
12. Burning out from being overworked is not good.
13. Some opportunities will slip by. You'll live.
14. You can't please everyone all the time. Trying to do so will kill you.
15. Splurge once in a while. Your wardrobe (and a certain best friend) will be grateful.
16. Maturity is not a function of age. It's okay to want ice cream for breakfast. Sometimes.
17. Meet new people and meet the old ones too.
18. Musicians are just not for you. They make awesome buddies though.
19. It's healthy to dream big.
20. You're stuck with the family you have. Might as well find a way to live with it, happily.
21. If you've hit rock bottom, then there's nowhere to go but up.
Of this large list, I've managed to follow about a third, which in my opinion isn't so bad. So, instead of hoping to carry this on, creating a longer list and forcing myself into doing things that I don't really know why I'm doing, I'm going to welcome 2015 with no expectations, at all.
However, since this is MY blog and it is via this one safe haven through which I can actually vent, here are the lessons I've learnt this past year. Brace yourselves, a rant is coming. If any or all of these make sense to you, awesome, if none of it does, it's cool too. Life isn't a competition, no matter what people say. Harmony is possible to achieve.
1. Some people come into your life for a short amount of time and wreck havoc. It's alright. Each person you meet has a life lesson to teach you. Whether you're willing to learn from the experience of knowing them is entirely up to you. Being open to learning greatly helps moving on.
2. Some opportunities aren't meant to be won. Failure isn't a bad thing all the time. Failing at something isn't a direct hit to your ego, it's a step forward towards figuring out what doesn't work for you so that you can eliminate that option. Eliminating possibilities that don't work for you helps in gaining clarity.
3. Everyone is a critic. Criticism can cripple, but it can also comfort you and push you forward. If you're not annoying someone somewhere, you're doing something wrong.
4. Over communicating is a legitimate thing. So is over analyzing and over thinking. Learning to trust your instincts can go a long way, but you need to learn to trust it even when it leads you to not-so-happy situations.
5. Shit happens. Murphy's Law exists. Bad luck can kick you when you're down. But it doesn't mean you give up trying. Perseverance teaches you patience, and all good things come to those who wait.
6. Being shamed for failing or making mistakes or making bad choices and wrong moves happens. People are like that. Being shamed for not trying something out, purely due to fear though is something shameful indeed. Regret will eat you up.
7. Nobody is sure of anything. Everyone is trying to figure their lives out one day at a time. And if someone tells you that they are "sorted for life", congratulate them and move on. Your happiness cannot be measure by their yardstick. Comparing your life to someone else's will only be a waste of time.
8. Never give up trying. It's okay to falter. It's okay to be scared. It's okay to be unsure. You're in your mid-20s, there is no ticking time bomb over your head charting your best-time to the finish line. Hell, you don't even know where the finish line is. It could be tomorrow, it could be a 100 years from now. Nobody knows how things are going to turn out for sure, but it doesn't mean that fear of doing something new should hold you back.
9. Your body is a vessel for your life force. Treating it well will reap rewards. Overworking will burn you out, make you fall ill and give you unnecessary stress that you do not need. Life is about finding happiness and peace, and not about stress and tension.
10. Success is subjective.
Here's to the end of one of the worst years I've been through. Here's to another 12 months of surviving, persevering and searching for that subjective success.
